Most Alabama Congressmen Support Flag Amendment

By Alabama Public Radio

Washington, DC – Most of the state's U-S House delegation voted to approve a constitutional amendment to outlaw flag burning. Only Democrat Artur Davis voted against the proposal. Republican Jo Bonner was the only one who did not cast a vote. Wednesday's final vote was 286-to-130, and it will send the proposal to the Senate. It is the seventh time since the Supreme Court ruled that burning the flag is constitutionally protected free speech that the House has approved the amendment. Supporters say the amendment reflects the increased patriotism in the wake of September eleventh. Opponents argue the amendment would infringe on the free speech that the flag stands for and would open the door on further limiting the First Amendment.
