Voters Will Decide Funding Amendment

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – State voters have less than a year to pick sides on a school funding referendum. The legislature passed a constitutional amendment during the special session. It will go before voters on June 27th, 2006. Residents of 30 Alabama school districts would be required to pay higher property taxes if the amendment is approved. The proposal would require all city and county school systems to have at least ten mills of property tax allocated for public schools. Right now, 24 county systems and six city systems have less than ten mills of property tax. There are 100 city and county school systems with ten mills or more.
