Vote On Scaled Down Charter School Bill Delayed

Montgomery, AL – A bill to authorize charter schools in Alabama has been scaled down to create just 20 of the schools in the state. That's down from the original plan for 50.

A new version of the bill to authorize the schools that operate with public money but without many of the rules of public education was revealed Wednesday by a House committee considering the controversial proposal.

The House Ways and Means-Education Committee had been planning to vote Wednesday on the bill supported by Republican Gov. Robert Bentley and by GOP leadership in the House and Senate. But when sponsor Republican Rep. Phil Williams of Huntsville presented the scaled down version, chairman Republican Rep. Jay Love of Montgomery said the vote would be delayed until Thursday morning.
