Montgomery, AL – The Alabama House has passed a bill to restore a settlement aimed at saving Alabama's financially troubled prepaid college tuition plan.
The bill passed the House 73-16 Thursday and now goes to the Senate for debate.
The bill addresses issues raised by the Alabama Supreme Court when it struck down the settlement last month. The settlement called for the tuition plan to pay participants at fall 2010 levels instead of at current levels. The Supreme Court said the settlement violated a law passed by the Legislature that said the PACT program was to be fully funded,
The sponsor, Republican Rep. Jay Love of Birmingham, said hopefully the bill will resolve the Supreme Court objections to the settlement.
Opponents said lawmakers should instead pass a plan to pay participants in full.
