Health and safety conference hosted in Orange Beach

Workplace health and safety will be the topic of discussion on the Alabama coast this week.

The University of Alabama Safe State Institute is hosting the 34th annual Governor’s Safety and Health Conference. The event is aimed at bringing together business professionals and health and safety workers to create safer work spaces. Attendees will get to participate in workshops and use new technology.

Executive Director Don Elswick said this conference will give business supervisors the information they need to create safe and efficient workplace.

“We have a track on ‘occupational health,’ we have a track on ‘new to safety,’ we have a track on ‘innovation,’" he said. "So, every track is targeted toward what we’re hearing from our customer base – that we need to focus on, that they want enhancements that they want to protect, again, the citizens of Alabama."

Elswick said the conference is an effective way to help Alabama workplaces function in a more modern way.

“We connect safety and health professionals and supervisors together, where they can learn best practices. So the conference kind of is two-fold," he said. "Obviously, we’re looking at innovation, but also looking at success stories from each other.”

Alabama continues to deal with rising COVID cases which is impacting businesses and schools. The conference will be held at the Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach. It runs through Wednesday.
