Alabama on Alert for rough winds, maybe tornadoes

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Alabama may be buffeted by high winds from a storm system that could bring severe weather to the state. The National Weather Service issued advisories Saturday saying much of the state could receive winds gusting to 35 mph through Sunday afternoon. Forecasters say winds could be even stronger as the system arrives, bringing with it a chance of severe storms and isolated tornadoes. The weather service says there's a high risk of damaging winds in central Alabama, and there's a moderate risk in northern and southern Alabama. Forecasters say rains will continue through Sunday before moving into Georgia. Severe weather isn't that unusual in Alabama in December. A tornado caused damage in Mobile last Christmas, and a December tornado killed 11 people in Tuscaloosa 13 years ago.
