State lawmakers and education officials have filed a state lawsuit to have the Alabama Accountability Act ruled unconstitutional.
The Montgomery Advertiser reported Wednesday (http://on.mgmadv.com/15yhreh) that the suit was filed on behalf of Democratic state Sen. Quinton Ross of Montgomery, Lowndes County schools Superintendent Daniel Boyd and Alabama Education Association president Anita Gibson.
They say the Accountability Act diverts money to schools that may be religious, and they take issue with the way the law was passed during the last legislative session.
The Alabama Accountability Act provides tax credits of about $3,500 for parents looking to transfer their children from schools that are considered failing to participating private schools.
The Southern Poverty Law Center also filed a lawsuit this month to try blocking the legislation from being implemented.
