Ala. Governor: Pay Back $146 M To Trust Fund

Gov. Robert Bentley says he and legislative leaders are committed to paying back the money if Alabama voters agree to take more than $437 million from a state trust fund to balance the state General Fund budget for three years.

Voters will go to the polls Sept. 18 to decide whether to approve a constitutional amendment taking nearly $146 million a year for three years from the Alabama Trust Fund. The constitutional amendment doesn't provide for repayment. But Bentley said Tuesday in Montgomery that he and legislative leaders are committed to seeing that it happens. He said the payback will probably go beyond his current four-year term.

The governor said committing to repay that money should help get more people to vote for it next month.
