Legislation has been prepared that would allow schools in a rural northwest Alabama county to train teachers and other school workers as reserve sheriff's deputies.
Democratic state Rep. Johnny Mack Morrow of Red Bay said he is having advertised a local bill that would allow workers in Franklin County and Russellville city schools to receive training as reserve deputies.
Morrow said teachers or other school workers would volunteer for the training. Morrow said he believes having trained reserve deputies in schools would help stop incidents like the shooting last month at a Connecticut elementary school. Morrow said he believes the bill would help small rural school systems that don't have the money to hire resource officers.
Morrow plans to introduce a similar bill that would apply to schools statewide.
