Ala. Companies Raise $23K for Okla. Tornado Relief

Bank Independent/Nucor Steel

Two businesses in northern Alabama say they raised more than $23,000 to help residents of an Oklahoma city that was devastated by tornadoes two months ago.

Al.com reports (http://bit.ly/13cJq2R ) the money came from a joint fundraising effort by Florence-based Bank Independent and Nucor Steel of Decatur, which produces sheet steel.

Bank Independent President Macke Mauldin said his employees wanted to help victims of the May tornadoes that struck Moore, Okla., to repay the kindness of others who helped Alabama residents rebuild after similar storms struck here in April 2011.

Mike Lee, vice president and general manager for Nucor, says his employees used money raised to distribute gift cards in amounts of $50 to $100 to Moore families needing help.
