Birmingham and Mobile are both electing mayors on Tuesday.
In Birmingham, incumbent William Bell faces four challengers as he seeks his first, full four-year term. Bell originally took office after the felony conviction of former Mayor Larry Langford and then won a shortened term.
Bell is being opposed by Kamau Afrika, Patricia Bell, Stephannie Sigler Huey and Adlai Trone in a low-key municipal campaign.
In Mobile, Mayor Sam Jones is being opposed by Sandy Stimpson and Doris Brown.
The Mobile mayoral race has been contentious, with Jones getting union backing and Stimpson picking up endorsements from business-related groups.
Birmingham is the state's largest city with a population of around 212,000. Mobile is No. 3 in size with a population of 195,000 people, according to the Census Bureau.
