Ala. GOP Leader Worries About Democratic Invaders

Alabama's Republican chairman is worried that his party's primary election won't be a real GOP event because of Democratic intruders.

Chairman Bill Armistead says he expects candidates with Democratic views to qualify to run as Republicans in the primary election June 3. He says they know they can't win election running as Democrats in a state where the GOP holds every statewide elected office and two-thirds of the Legislature's seats. Armistead says he also expects voters who traditionally vote in the Democratic primary to choose the Republican one because their party won't have a hotly contested race.

But the Democratic Party's interim leader, Nancy Worley, says hardcore Democrats won't vote in the Republican primary. She says independent voters might, but notes that they've been switching between primaries for years.
