Abortion Trial Gets Underway

The owner of a Montgomery abortion clinic says she's never had a Montgomery-based physician performing abortions at the clinic during her 36 years at the facility and she has always used out-of-town doctors.

June Ayers, the owner of Reproductive Health Services, was the first witness Monday in the trial of a suit that she and others filed over an Alabama abortion law. It requires clinics to use doctors who have approval to admit patients to nearby hospitals in case of complications. Ayers' clinic and the clinics in Mobile and Birmingham say they will have to close if the law is enforced.

Ayers testified her traveling physicians wouldn't qualify for admitting privileges because they don't live in the Montgomery area and would not have the required number of hospital admissions.
