Old Tuscaloosa jail on "endangered list"

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — An old west Alabama jail dating to the mid-1800s is in danger of being lost to neglect. The Alabama Historical Commission has included the old Tuscaloosa County jail on its list of Alabama structures that are "places in peril." The two-story brick building was the county jail from 1856 until 1890. It later became a boarding house, a veteran's hall and a school. But The Tuscaloosa News reports the structure has been vacant since 2007, and it's near new residential and commercial construction. Preservation advocates fear the building could deteriorate through neglect or be threatened by rising property values in the area.
