MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A news report says that FBI crime data hasn't matched data released by police in Montgomery for years.
The Montgomery Advertiser reports the FBI's annual report released last month shows that Montgomery had 29 cases of murder or non-negligent manslaughter in 2018. But city police say there were actually 38 cases. A similar gap persists in data from 2017, 2016, 2015 and 2014. In 2013, the agencies both reported seeing 50 such cases, the highest in the last decade.
Police Capt. Regina Duckett says the department submits data to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, which submits it to the FBI. She says the department's data is automatically submitted electronically. Spokeswoman Robyn Bryan says the state agency is "revamping" its reports. She said she has been looking into the discrepancy.
