Former church bookkeeper gets probation for embezzlement

ANNISTON, Ala. (WBMA-TV) — A former church bookkeeper in Alabama has been sentenced to five years of probation for embezzling nearly $500,000.

WBMA-TV reports Angela Cheatwood was sentenced Tuesday. She was the bookkeeper for Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church and Sacred Heart School in Anniston. She plead guilty in September to wire fraud.

Federal prosecutors say she wrote unauthorized checks to herself from the church bank account. Authorities also say she took cash from school fundraisers and donations.

She was also ordered to pay restitution.
