MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — State Sen. David Burkette of Montgomery has resigned from the Alabama Legislature.

A spokeswoman for Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey says the Montgomery Democrat submitted his resignation Tuesday. Burkette did not elaborate on his sudden departure. However, the Alabama Ethics Commission last year forwarded a complaint involving Burkette to local prosecutors, although the nature of the complaint was not disclosed.

Ivey spokeswoman Gina Maiola said the governor is disappointed but supports the rule of law, particularly in a situation where there has been a misuse of public trust.
