MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama’s parole director is resigning. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey's office said Monday that Charlie Graddick will be out by month's end as director of the Bureau of Pardons and Paroles.
She appointed Graddick last year, tasking him with overhauling the agency and prioritizing safety for victims. Ivey says Graddick rebuilt staff morale, improved field operations and upgraded equipment so that agency employees can work more efficiently.
Advocacy groups said the parole board effectively came to a screeching halt, and that Black inmates in particular have been unfairly kept behind bars.
