Gov. Kay Ivey has extended Alabama's mask and "safer at home" orders through to Jan. 22, 2021.
Ivey made the announcement as just two days before both orders were set to expire.
Alabama's COVID-19 cases continue to rise after the Thanksgiving holiday.
"Because the pandemic has stretched much longer than we ever imagined, we’re all just downright exhausted. Even though the vaccine’s delivery is right around the corner, we shouldn’t lull ourselves into complacency by thinking that we’re out of the woods yet," Ivey said on Twitter. "I ask everyone – as we strive to get back to normal & as the vaccine begins to be rolled out to the most vulnerable populations – that we don’t just flip the switch & mentally 'move on' from taking precautions. Please continue to be considerate."
As of Wednesday Alabama has 280,187 cases, 2,111 current hospitalizations, and 3,985 deaths from the coronavirus.
