Yoga may stay banned from Alabama public schools for a little bit longer.
A new bill that would allow it was stalled in the Alabama Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday. Two conservative groups halted a hearing when they objected the bill because of yoga's ties to Hinduism.
Democratic Rep. Jeremy Gray of Opelika inroduced the newest bill that would allow schools to authorize yoga if they choose. Gray, who started practicing yoga as a college football player, said the bill is about exercise and not religion.
In 1993 the Alabama Board of Education voted to prohibit the practice in classrooms.
