Two state senators have said they want part of a statewide property tax tied to the Confederacy to be diverted to preserve and promote Black history.
The tax, which is still collected, funds pensions for Confederate soldiers and their widows. Most of the revenue is used for other purposes, but 1 percent goes to the state's Confederate Memorial Park in Mountain Creek.
Sen. Clyde Chambliss and Sen. Bobby Singleton will sponsor the bill to preserve park funding, but require the state spend an equal 1% on Black history sites. The bill would also establish a process to move Confederate monuments from elsewhere to the park.
