Alabama lawmakers have approved a proposal that would give judges more discretion to deny bail to people accused of violent crimes.
The amendment to the sate Constitution will now go to voters to be approved before it can go into effect. It would rewrite a section of the Alabama Constitution to clarify offenses where a judge can deny bail.
The legislation is called Aniah's Law after19-year-old Aniah Blanchard, who was kidnapped and killed in 2019. The suspect was free on bond at the time from an earlier kidnapping case.
