The ship channel at the northern end of Mobile Bay is under refurbishment in a $365 million project.

The widening and deepening of the channel began Friday as crews started dredging along a 12-mile stretch. The project is supposed to be done by 2025 through contracts awarded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Executive officer John C. Driscoll said the work on the channel is necessary to the port.
