A new program would allow some inmates to receive up to a year off of their prison sentences by completing vocational or other training.

The Alabama Education Incentive Time Act was approved by state lawmakers and allows inmates earn up to 12 months off their sentence by completing vocational, apprecnticeship or other education programs. Around 2,500 inmates are eligible for the program that excludes most state prisoners.

The legislation was sponsored by Sen. Clyde Chambliss who said research shows that inmates who complete quality education programs are much less likely to return to prison.
