Gardeners in Lowndes County are getting to show off their green thumbs.
The Alabama 4-H foundation is sponsoring a summer gardening project contest with Home Depot. The contest runs from now until August.
LaKisha King is the 4-H Foundation Regional Extension Agent for Lowndes and Butler Counties. She said the focus of the contest for kids and teens to learn where some table food actually comes from.
“The purpose of the project is to give kids the opportunity to have hands-on experience with growing and harvesting within their own homes, in their own gardens in containers,” King said. “As 4-H, we like to give our kids hands-on experiences, and agriculture is an important part of Alabama.
King also said contestants will be judged on maintaining a gardening journal.
“With the garden journal, they’re going to record the date that they’re given a plant,” King said. “Then they will record different things that occur throughout the process. They will record how much they watered the plant and things like that. And they’ll also be judged on harvest and presentation.”
The contest is for ages 9 to 18. Prizes for the contest include a Home Depot “beginners garden kit.” A $20 Home Depot gift card will be awarded to the top three finishers.
