The federal freeze on evictions will end July 31, leaving thousands of Alabamians vulnerable to being kicked out of their homes.
The state has set aside more than $263 million to help with outstanding rents and other payments, but federal rules have caused the flow of money to those in need to slow down.
Vacancy rates in Alabama were 16% before the pandemic, but rents are continuing to increase.
