Alabama House Speaker Mac McCutcheon says he will not be running for reelection next year.
He said in a statement Monday that he is retired and is stepping away from politics to spend time with his family.
McCutcheon replaced Mike Hubbard in 2016 after the former speaker was convicted on ethics charges. The next speaker will be selected in the organizational session in 2023.
