Relief is coming to Alabamians still dealing with the aftermath of tornadoes that hit in March. Five people were killed when twisters hit the town of Ohatchee.
The Community Food Bank of Central Alabama hosted a drive-thru food distribution for over 700 families in Shelby County July 8. They provided households with boxes of non-perishable goods and fresh produce.
Mario Dorsey is the Retail Coordinator for the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama. He said anyone ever in need of additional food is always welcome.
“What we’re doing is we’re reaching out to the community and surrounding communities for the South that were affected by the tornado, and we plan to feed up to 700 families if it’s possible,” he said.
He said this food will help families in need make it through the month.
“We have a mission just to cover areas that are in dire need of food. Our goal is to actually feed those who kind of don’t make it to the end of the month,” he said.
The food was handed out through a drive-thru center to reduce possible exposure to COVID-19.
The Community Food Bank will continue to provide food for households in need. They are actively accepting food donations and volunteers.
