Alabamians are involved in a lawsuit over the effects of an herbicide.
The chemical known as paraquat has been linked to cases of Parkinson’s Disease in people exposed to it. Thirteen Alabamians are joining around 500 others across the country in a lawsuit being filed by the Miller Firm.
Senior partner Michael Miller said the chemical was known to increase the chances of coming down with Parkinson’s.
“Even by the manufacturer’s own studies, Syngenta, increases the risk of Parkinson’s by 47% but independent studies show its three to six times more likely to get Parkinson’s Disease with any reasonable exposure to paraquat,” he said.
Miller said this is not the first time his firm has dealt with a problem like this.
“We’re bringing those cases to court because Syngenta has known for well over 20 years that paraquat causes Parkinson’s disease and hid it," he said. "They refused to tell the consuming public and they refused to tell the Environmental Protection Agency and we’re going to call them to task for that the same way we did Monsanto for Roundup.”
The Miller Firm is suing Syngenta, which makes the herbicide. The suit also names Chevron which used to manufacture the chemical. APR has reached out to Syngenta for comment.
