There are hardly any intesive care unit beds available in the state of Alabama as the number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise.
The Alabama Hospital Association said the state has 1,562 ICU beds and that 1,560 hospitalized patients needed intensive care Monday.
Former state health officer Dr. Don Williamson now heads the Alabama Hospital Association and said the demand on the ICU system is the highest the state has ever seen. Williamson said that 85% of the patients hospitalized with COVID-19 are unvaccinated, 12% were fully vaccinated, and 3% were partially vaccinated.
The delta variant of the virus has continued to spread as Alabama's vaccination rate remains one of the lowest in the country.
