Alabama treasurer steps down for new appointment

Alabama State Treasurer John McMillan will take over a new state panel dealing with medical marijuana.

The governor's office announced the switch Friday. McMillan's predecessor as treasurer, Young Boozer, is being appointed to take over the position once again.

The 14-member commission was created by lawmakers when they approved medical marijuana in Alabama earlier this year.

The agency will establish rules for growing, distributing and selling marijuana for medicinal purposes statewide. McMillan’s previous posts include serving as state agriculture commissioner and as commissioner of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Sales of medical marijuana are supposed to begin in Alabama next year.
