An Alabama mayor has been immediately removed from office after pleading guilty to using his official position or office for personal gain.
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced on Wednesday that Lanett Mayor Jonathon Kyle MCoy had issued a guilty plea in Chambers County Circuit Court to two felony charges. The former mayor is barred from holding office in the future and was charged earlier this year.
The plea agreement states that McCoy provided a city-owned Chevrolet Tahoe to a family member for seven months. He also admitted to using his position as mayor to avoid paying for utility services on seven different accounts. He stopped paying for utilities at various times between June 2017 and April 2018.
Chambers County Circuit Judge Steve Perryman set sentencing for Oct. 26. McCoy faces possible penalties of two to 20 years behind bars and fines of up to $30,000 for each of the two felony convictions.
