The Alabama Supreme court ruled on Friday that the records about a fatal shooting by a Baldwin County deputy do not have to be turned over.
The ruling upheld a lower court that sided with the sheriff's office and broadly interpreted an exemption for investigative records.
Chief justice Tom Parker wrote a strongly worded dissent following the ruling. He said the ruling "spells the end of public access to law enforcement records" that might be connected to an investigation.
