Gov. Kay Ivey has called a special session to focus on prison construction as a solution to the state's ongoing correctional problems.

Lawmakers were asked on Thursday to return to Montgomery on Monday to discuss a $1.3 billion prison construction plan. The plan will use $400 million from the state's virus relief funds to help build three new prisons throughout the state and renovate the others.

Ivey has also asked legislators to vote on bills that would make sentencing and supervision changes retroactive.

Advocacy groups and some lawmakers have argued that new buildings will not fix the issues with Alabama's prisons.
