A former military veteran who was shot down in the infamous “Black Hawk Down” battle announced that he is running for the Republican nomination in Alabama’s U.S. Senate race on Tuesday.
Durant moved to Alabama after retiring from the Army and currently owns an aerospace company in Huntsville. He will run for the seat that will be vacated by Senator Richard Shelby when Shelby retires in 2022.
Mike Durant was shot down in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1993 while flying a Black Hawk helicopter. He was held prisoner for 11 days before being rescued. The incident, during which 18 Americans died and 73 were injured, was depicted in a book and film.
He joins four other candidates for the Republican nomination, including Mo Brooks, the congressman endorsed by former President Trump.
