November marks the beginning of Alabama’s second severe weather season. Due to cold fronts colliding with warm Gulf of Mexico, there are possibilities for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. November is the third-busiest month when it comes to tornadoes in Alabama. December also can produce severe weather, as the state has had tornado activity as far out as Christmas Day in the past.
Gary Goggins is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Birmingham. He said the best way to prepare in case of an emergency is to be connected to multiple warning systems.
“Folks need to have multiple ways to receive warnings as we get into a more active dynamic weather patterns,” Goggins said. “We’re getting out of that summertime pattern and we’re getting into more progressive patterns with these stronger systems moving down into our neck of the woods.”
Regular day-to-day weather also brings new changes. Goggins said the best way to adjust is to stay updated on forecasts.
“The biggest thing is now that we’re getting into the fall season is to pay attention to weather forecast more often so that you know what to expect,” Goggins said. “The weather can change really quickly and this time of the year things can get cold really quickly.”
Goggins also says there are many ways to stay updated on weather in your area. One is to have severe weather alerts turned on your mobile device and another is to tune in to weather radio.
