Your future Amazon packages could be shipped through a facility in Montgomery. The online retail giant is investing one hundred million dollars on a new facility in Alabama’s Capitol City. The new Amazon hub will receive items from the port of Mobile and send them on to other fulfillment centers. The mega retailer plans to open the six hundred and fifty thousand square foot facility by the end of next year. Ellen McNair is the Senior Vice President of the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce. She says the city has an ideal location for manufacturing and logistics.
“We have got a beautiful, beautiful site that is strategically placed right on I-65 in between the Hope Hull interchange and the highway 80 interchange with a five lane US highway,” said McNair.
McNair says the Montgomery site will be different from traditional fulfilment centers like the one in Bessemer that warehouses Amazon products and ships them out to customers as the orders come in.
“It’s called an inbound cross dock facility,” McNair said of the new Montomery facility.” So it receives items from vendors all over the place, brings those items into the facility, and then consolidates those items and sends them to the fulfillment center.”
Amazon plans to open the facility by the end of next year. The company also plans to open facilities in Birmingham and Huntsville.
