For the third year in a row, the rate of inmates in Alabama being granted parole has dropped.
The Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles is comprised of three members and reportedly granted parole for 648 inmates while declining parole for 3,584 others in the past fiscal year. The rate of paroles granted to prison inmates was 15%. Statistics also show that black prisoners are being granted parole less often than white prisoners.
Critics have said that the board isn’t “following its own rules” when it comes to granting parole.
Statistics and data released by the state show that the most frequent felony offense at conviction between 2015-2020 was “possession of controlled substance” charges.
