Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi are receiving more than $103 million in additional BP oil spill settlement money for new and continued coastal projects. The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation says the eleven new projects bring the total across five Gulf states to $1.6 billion. Alabama’s four projects focus on the Gulf coast. Three of the new projects are intended to stabilize eroding shorelines and restore coastal marsh in Mobile County and on Dauphin Island. Previous grants covered engineering, design and permitting for those projects. The fourth grant will pay for engineering and design of beach and dune restoration on Dauphin Island's west end. Along with Alabama’s projects, Florida is getting nearly $33 million for one new project. The remaining $27 million will continue two projects in Mississippi and support six new ones. The foundation's Gulf Environmental Benefit Fund received $2.5 billion in a settlement after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
Alabama Public Radio received its 4th national Sigma Delta Chi award from the Society of Professional Journalists for a documentary on the 10th anniversary of the BP oil spill. The program featured two of APR’s Gulf coast correspondents, Guy Busby and Lynn Oldshue. APR’s award is one of only 10 that SPJ bestows in radio each year.
