Some Alabama Voters Heading to Polls Today

Voters in Tuscaloosa as well as a House district in the Birmingham area are heading to the polls today to decide the future of their community representation.

District 58 needs a new representative in the Alabama House after Oliver Robinson retired last fall. Today the district is holding its primary election. If there is no need for a run-off, the general election will be held May 23.

Tuscaloosa is electing local representatives for Mayor, School Board and City Council. This year's elections will debut electronic poll books. Poll workers will scan voter IDs upon arrival, and voters will sign on the poll pad electronically.

Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill says the new technology will increase efficiency at the polls.

“...[but] as importantly is credibility and integrity in the process. Because it’s difficult for you to impersonate someone or to impersonate someone’s signature if they’re able to compare the signature against the one that’s on file in the Alabama law enforcement officers’ office.”

Voters can find their poll location by contacting local government authorities.
