Birmingham officer charged in assault on prisoner

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A Birmingham police officer is charged with assaulting a female prisoner.

Authorities say 25-year-old Stephon Green of Bessemer was arrested Wednesday on a second-degree assault charge.

Police say Green was taking a female prisoner to a hospital on Aug. 1 when she sustained serious injuries to her face.

The officer was placed on administrative duties after supervisors learned the woman was hurt during an altercation while she was in Green's custody.

Green has been a Birmingham police officer since 2016, and he is now jailed with bail set at $15,000. Officials say he is on leave without pay.

Court records aren't yet available to show whether he has an attorney who could speak on his behalf.
