COLUMBIA, Ala. (AP) — Federal regulators have approved a request by Southern Nuclear Operating Co. Inc. to increase the capacity of the two reactors at Farley Nuclear Plant, located on the Chattahoochee River in southeast Alabama.

The Dothan Eagle reports the Nuclear Regulatory Commission allowed the increase after staff members determined the company could safely increase the heat output of both reactors. Southern Nuclear plans to implement the changes within months.

The plant is near the Georgia state line, and has been open since 1981. Farley produces about 20 percent of Alabama Power's electricity.
