Heroin Surge, College Playoffs and Player Awards

Law officers in northwest Alabama say they are seeing a surge of heroin abuse and crime related to the drug.

They say the resurgence of heroin in Alabama in recent years mirrors national patterns.

The Times-Daily reports that authorities in several northwest Alabama counties say they didn't see heroin in their areas before 2013. But in the past two years, they've made arrests for drug crimes related to its sale. In Lauderdale County, officials reported five overdose-related deaths this year.

It’s Alabama versus Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl. The committee that names the final four teams for the championship playoffs selected Alabama, FSU, Oregon, and the Buckeyes for the semi-final games. The announcements comes after Alabama’s victory over Missouri in the SEC championship. Wide Receiver Christion Jones was quick to spread the credit around following the game….

It feels great man! Proud of our team, our coaches, it feels great, man. We got a long road ahead, we know what’s at stake right now. We just know we put ourselves in a good position.”

Alabama had two hundred and forty two rushing yards during the SEC Championship game compared to just forty two for Missouri. We had production Assistance from WVUA-TV on this story.

Fans of the Alabama Crimson Tide are waiting for another announcement later today. Finalists for this year’s Heisman Trophy will be named tonight. Supporters of wide receiver Amari Cooper are wondering if he will be part of that group to go to New York City. Cooper caught thirteen passes during Alabama’s win over Auburn in the Iron Bowl. Despite breaking records set by Julio Jones and Ozzie Newsome, Cooper says it’s not all him…

Just positive thoughts, working really hard. I got to give a lot of credit to Coach Kiffin. He’s a great offensive coordinator. He draws up really good plays to put his play-makers in situations to make the plays.”

Cooper is already a finalist for the Walter Camp award for the best player in college football. The winner of that honor will be announced on Thursday.
