Scottsboro, AL – The state lost another World War One veteran over the weekend. Charley Newton Cook died Saturday at the age of 107. Cook had been living at a nursing home in Scottsboro. But it just a few years ago when Cook was still marching in Veterans Day parades and driving himself around town. His funeral will be Tuesday at 11 A-M at First United Methodist Church in Scottsboro, and he will be buried in Pinehaven Memorial Gardens. Cook was Alabama's second World War One veteran to die this month. Henry Abrams, also 107 years old, died earlier this month. 104-year-old Robert Weatherly is now Alabama's last surviving World War One veteran. He lives in a nursing home in Birmingham. There are fewer than 200 surviving World War One veterans nationwide.
