Montgomery, AL – At least two state lawmakers say the possibility of a state lottery will be discussed in the upcoming regular session.
State Senate President Pro Tem Lowell Barron says lawmakers are looking for ways to create new revenue, and they could pass a constitutional amendment to legalize a lottery. That amendment would be put before voters in a referendum. State Representative John Rogers has said he will propose a constitutional amendment to legalize a lottery and casinos.
In 1999, voters handily defeated former Governor Don Siegelman's lottery plan. Governor Bob Riley says he opposes a lottery and casinos in Alabama. Neighboring states have legalized some form of gambling. Florida, Georgia and Tennessee have legalized lotteries, and Mississippi has casinos.
