Groups Wants Budget Changes

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – A new foundation has organized with the intent of pushing for changes in state budgets and audits.
The Foundation for Educational and Economic Development helped defeat Governor Bob Riley's tax plan in September. But the group says it would support future tax increases if its budget and auditing recommendations become law. Foundation chairman Jimmy Baker says the Legislature should stop using overly optimistic projections to draw up state budgets. The group also wants to create 4-percent reserve accounts for the state General Fund and Education Trust Fund.
A Governor's spokesperson says the administration is considering some of the proposals.
