Lawmakers Expected to Consider School Funding Amendment

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – State lawmakers could consider an important piece of education legislation this week. The outcome could affect the amount of tax support schools receive. House bill 714 is a proposed constitutional amendment that would require local governments to levy a minimum of ten mills in property taxes to support schools. The requirement would have to be met before local governments could get state funding. Under the current state school funding system, governments are required to levy either ten mills or their equivalent amount in other taxes. The Alabama Education Association supports the proposal. Lawmakers have less than a month to consider the issue before the legislative session ends.
