Montgomery, AL – Alabama soldiers will not be able to use an Internet-based system to get absentee ballots for this fall's election. Attorney General Troy King issued an opinion Tuesday saying state law prohibits electronic forms of voting over the Internet. He says it's too late to change the law before the November Second election. Secretary of State Nancy Worley had asked King whether it was OK to use the Interim Voting Assistance System that she only learned about from the Defense Department last week. It would allow troops to request and receive absentee ballots via the Internet -- then return the ballots by mail. Worley says it currently takes soldiers overseas about 30 days to vote...but she says the new system would cut that time by more than half.
