Gulf Shores, AL – Hurricane Ivan caused significant damage not only for Alabama's human coastal residents. The storm also destroyed much of the habitat of the Alabama beach mouse. The endangered species recently has been at the center of disputes over beachfront construction. Sea turtle nests also were either buried or washed away. Federal wildlife officials are still estimating the damage to government-protected coastal areas, including the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. Environmentalists also say they're worried about damage to coastal sand dunes.
