Auburn, AL – The Auburn University Senate was presented with a proposal to create an e-mail monitoring policy. It would allow the university to monitor employees' e-mail and Internet usage. The proposal immediately caused concerns about privacy and civil liberties. Some faculty members said they believed the change would give administrators the ability to monitor activist employees. Employees would have to be notified if they are being monitored. Harmon Straiton, chair of the university's Academic Computing Committee, says the proposal simply informs employees that privacy is not a guarantee when using campus e-mail.
